DOUBLE COVERS
In the world of comic book collecting, few production anomalies generate as much intrigue and excitement as double covers. These rare misprints are exactly what they sound like: a comic book with two (or sometimes more) covers, one stacked atop the other.
Double covers occur during the printing process when multiple covers are mistakenly bound to a single comic book. Instead of catching and removing the extra cover, the printer allows the comic to proceed through the stage, resulting in a comic book with one or more extra covers. Typically, the outermost cover suffers the most wear over time, while the inner cover(s) usually remain in high grade.
Double covers are considered a true rarity. Their exact frequency is difficult to determine, as they are the result of random printing errors rather than intentional production choices. Some estimates suggest that double covers occur in less than 1% of all printed comic books.
Golden and Silver Age comics (1930s to 1970s) are more likely to feature double covers due to less advanced quality control measures during production. Modern comics, with their improved printing technology, are far less likely to contain such errors, making double covers from recent years exceedingly rare.
Double covers are a fascinating quirk of comic book production. Whether you stumble upon one in a long box at your local comic shop or actively seek them, owning a double cover comic is like holding a small piece of printing history in your hands.
