MONSTER MOVIE REVIEW: THE WOLFMAN (2010)

The Wolfman (2010) had everything going for it — a solid cast, creepy atmosphere, and one of Universal’s classic monsters. Let’s break it down.

Story – 6.3

The movie is set in Victorian England and follows Lawrence Talbot (Benicio Del Toro), who comes home after his brother’s mysterious death. Things get messy when he’s bitten by a werewolf and cursed to turn into one during the full moon.

The story sticks to the basics of the original 1941 movie — man gets cursed, struggles with his inner monster — but it feels a little slow at times. Lawrence’s strained relationship with his father (Anthony Hopkins) is interesting but doesn’t get explored enough. The romance with Gwen (Emily Blunt) also feels kind of rushed, even though Blunt tries her best to make it work.

Monsters/Villains – 7.6

The werewolf itself looks awesome. Rick Baker’s makeup and effects make the transformation scenes brutal and painful to watch — in a good way. It’s a cool mix of old-school monster design with modern touches.

Anthony Hopkins as Lawrence’s father is pretty creepy. Without giving away spoilers, let’s just say the real monster isn’t just the werewolf…

Actors/Characters – 6.4

Benicio Del Toro does a good job as the tortured Lawrence, but sometimes he’s a little too quiet when the story needs more emotion. Hopkins is great as usual, bringing a sinister vibe to the whole thing.

Emily Blunt tries her best to add warmth as Gwen, but the script doesn’t give her much to work with. Hugo Weaving as Inspector Abberline is fun to watch — he’s smart and determined, adding some energy to the hunt for the beast.

Joe Score – 7.1

The Wolfman (2010) looks great and has some solid werewolf action, but the story feels a little thin, and the emotional moments don’t always hit. Still, if you’re into gothic horror and classic monsters, it’s worth a watch — especially on a spooky night.
