HALLOWEEN MOVIE REVIEW: BONUS EDITION

Alright, folks! Today, we have a special bonus Halloween/Horror movie review for you. After the intense experience of watching The Exorcist, we figured it was time to cleanse the palate with a family-friendly flick! Enter Ernest Scared Stupid, which might just be the best of the Ernest movies—though I’ll admit I haven’t seen any of the others. But hey, that’s the perspective of an amateur movie reviewer! (By the way, I did put in my application for the Boston Globe movie reviewer position—still waiting to hear back!)

Rankings:

Monsters/Villains: 🤖🤖🤖🤖🤖🤖 (6.6)
The trolls in this movie are gross and somewhat scary, at least for 9-year-old Joe, who would likely say they were the most horrifying things he’s ever seen (I had a very sheltered childhood). The makeup on the monsters is solid, even if it leans a bit goofy at times. Perfectly fitting for what they were going for!

Actors/Characters: 🤖🤖🤖🤖 (4.8)
Jim Varney is fantastic—goofy, charismatic, and funny. There’s something endearing about his dopey character. I always wanted to be the Brendan Fraser type hero in The Mummy, but in reality, I’d be running around like Jim Varney with his dog, Rimshot, always tripping over myself and spilling milk all over the place. No Oscars will be won for best supporting actors here, but hey, it’s a low-budget, straight-to-video production!

Story: 🤖🤖🤖🤖 (4.2)
This isn’t exactly a classic novel by William Blatty or Robert Bloch, but it tells a decent story with a few plot holes. If it were released today, who knows? It might even snag an Academy Award for storytelling!

Joe's Score: 🤖🤖🤖🤖🤖 (5.8)
I probably should have made two categories for the Joe Score—one for 8-year-old Joe and one for 31-year-old Joe. Eight-year-old Joe would have given it a 9.4, while today’s Joe is going with a 5.8. It’s a pretty fun Halloween movie that you can enjoy with the kids to get into the Halloween spirit!

Overall Score: (5.35)
