HalloweeN Movie Review: The Fog (1980)

If you were watching our Tuesday show last night you would have heard us talking about the blog and we were given a few additional horror movies to review, so with the first recommendation John Carpenter’s atmospheric chiller, The Fog. This film has carved a niche in the horror genre, merging ghostly tales with a creeping sense of dread. We are certainly lacking a truly ghostly tale on the list so here we go!

Rankings:

Monsters/Villains: 🤖🤖🤖🤖🤖🤖🤖🤖 (8.2)
The fog itself is a character in its own right, bringing with it vengeful spirits who rise from the depths of a cursed shipwreck. These ghostly pirates, with their glowing eyes and menacing demeanor, create an ominous atmosphere that haunts the coastal town of Antonio Bay.

Actors/Characters: 🤖🤖🤖🤖🤖🤖🤖 (7.6)
This film boasts an impressive cast, including Jamie Lee Curtis, Adrienne Barbeau, and the legendary John Houseman. Each character is well-defined, from the strong-willed radio DJ to the skeptical local sheriff. Curtis shines as a young woman drawn into the mystery. The chemistry among the characters adds depth, making their fates even more compelling.

Story: 🤖🤖🤖🤖🤖🤖 (6.9)
The Fog tells a simple yet effective tale of revenge and supernatural retribution. Set against the backdrop of a town celebrating its centenary, the narrative unfolds gradually, building suspense as the fog rolls in. The intertwining of past and present creates a chilling atmosphere, though the pacing can feel slow at times.

Joe’s Score: 🤖🤖🤖🤖🤖🤖🤖 (7.3)
As we mentioned, this is the first of the recommendations from the show last night, and it did not disappoint. The Fog was a fun horror movie, sandwiched between Carpenter's two best horror films, Halloween and The Thing. Carpenter does a great job of building up the suspense and creating an aura around his films. This will definitely be a staple for Halloweens to come!
